Aluminum is expensive to process, and its source commodity is pricey. Aluminum is a commodity whose cost is increasing. It does not occur naturally in nature as a metal, and therefore requires processing. In the long span of human history and tool use, it simply did not exist, and only appeared in the last century or so, with the advent of electricity.
